'To Me', the 6th track from Telafonica's 'Sleeping With The Fishermen' album, becomes the 6th track to receive the full reworking treatment. Lunar Module keeps the vocal arrangement intact, but splices it onto a piece of nu-nu-wave synth-pop heaven. Limetipe goes all electronic moody, throwing out pretty much everything but a few little blips to create an enigmatic opus. Underlapper cast Telafonica in their own image, twisting the pop into dark moods highly reminiscent of their most recent album - Softly Harboured. Lessons In Time creates a whole new version, literalising the sounds of sleeping in dust with dirt on his brain (and, yes, Lessons In Time's Blake is also in Telafonica, but he didn't have much input into the original version, so chose this track as it was the one his Lessons In Time could most easily approach from the outside).

Track No. 5 from Telafonica's 'Sleeping With The Fishermen' album gets its turn at being twisted and turned into new and exciting shapes. Raven intricately re-recorded every sound from Telafonica's original master tracks, one by one, using just his cello - percussion, melodies, bassline, everything. The results are a million miles from the original, while being strangely identical. Hinterlandt turns the track into a loping electric lullaby, dragging the vocals through treacle and adding his own brand of multi-instrumental eclecticism. Genlevel pulls the track in another direction completely, converting it into a bass heavy electro workout, displaying his virtuoso roots in the 90s electronic underground, updated for today with wobbles, glitches and noise bursts.

The Sleeping With The Fishermen Remix project took a break in December, 2011, so that the album itself could be released. I Can See There's A Peace In The Dark sees the remixes flow once again.

First up is Australian legend, Dave McCormack (Custard, The Titanics, The Polaroids) who picks out the quirks of the track, ramps up the joyful, playful bits and presents a blissed out, summer groove. All artists were given free reign for their remixes - told to do whatever they like with the tracks. Canadians, Sally Paradise, go all out and actually cover the track for their version, creating a luxurious dream-pop with grainy synths, lazy guitars and canyons of reverb. Old friend Karoshi continue their run of sublime Telafonica remixes, glitching up, vocoderising and looping some vocal lines in a half-time stutter of moody atmospheres. America's Docile takes the harmony vocal and turns it into the main melody of a completely new chord structure, filled with piano and arppegiating synths to create music that could be soundtrack the emotional crux of an indie film.

The second of the monthly installments of remix EPs for the 'Sleeping With The Fishermen' album. St Jambience gets glitchy and jumpy with his abstract deconstruction. Sounds Like Sunset get their heavy groove on over a buzzing electro bassline while Actual Russian Brides pull into bleepy, buzzy synthetic territory.

The master stems have also been released to the public for anyone to create their own fan mix. All fan mixes will be published online via Bandcamp. Head to tiny.cc/unravelling-man for the files. Send your remixes as aiff or wav files to contact@4-4-2music.com via wetranser.com, yousendit.com or any such large file transfer system. We shall master them for you before publishing the remixes.

dj foundation - the mosul mix

a remix i did for dj foundation just before christmas was chosen to be part of his promo dj mix which is going out all over the planet. he's a producer from iraq signed to metal postcard. he's got a bit of a name for himself for aiming broadsides at american foreign policy etc. the remix i did was for a track called 'clinton', which features snatches of a speech by bill when he was el pres. his words have been slyly edited by dj foundation. anyway, the mix is now available in a relatively low bit rate mp3, but will be heard on radio around the globe over the next few months hopefully.

while making the remix i was listening to buraka som sistema's album quite a lot, so the rhythms are pretty much ripped off from there. i wanted a big repetitive bass line that had some funk, i think i got it.

fluffy rabbit

i (along with, but separate to, blake) have been working on some remixes over the past few weeks. i think i might begin to just randomly find these kinds of things via myspace etc and do them. i've decided it might be a good way to try out ideas relatively quickly and get them out, and then see the results to see if the ideas are worth pursuing in our own music down the track. i just finished one last night for a guy called tidy kid. it's now on both our myspace page (because that's where he asked for them to be to initially hear them) and on the virb page (because that's where i'm putting everything!). there's a bit of a write-up with it on the virb page. tidy kid normally doesn't do cheesy stuff, but some of the samples given for this remix are quite cheesy. i mostly disregarded them and make something else.

this is the remix thing

i now officially have all the remixes that we are expecting at this point in time. i got andreas' one this morning - a remix of this is the new thing. his official solo name is sunstroke militia. it's just great - it only uses the sounds we gave him, so it sounds like us, but it has this brooding, german thing going on which is perfect. my feeling at this point is that we use the six remixes we have on the actual e.p., they are diverse but i think flow well if we order them right. then any copies we send off to radio we add the original of this is the new thing at the front and try and get some ariplay for that, as well as any of the remixes that different people might like. and that may hopefully build some interest for the album, to be released in a little while.

postmodern folk music

well, we have a whole bunch of new remixes to work with now. i set today as a deadline in order to give us time to get it all together for september 8. the quality has been pretty impressive. it's interesting that 'tape noise' was the most popular choice of track to remix, though everything on the list i posted got chosen by someone. i'll keep forwarding the download links as i receive them. so far there's marshall watson (which you've already heard), broken chip and all india radio doing 'tape noise', andreas has done 'this is the new thing' which he'll send over tonight, and TiefenKLANG has done 'laughing at trees' (title to be confirmed). i also have a cd at home from andy rantzen which i'll mp3 and send to you - it's a monster 9+ minute epic of growling rhythm experiments based on 'item number'.

remixes et al

i received the first fruits of our search for some remixes today. i've just got an mp3 at the moment. it's from a guy in a band called this sad machine. they've done 'tape noise' (can anyone think of a better name for that track?). i'll e-mail it to you. let me know what you all think of it. andreas has chosen to do 'this is the new thing' and andy has chosen 'item number'. it's nice how different people are all being attracted to different pieces.

i've fixed all the links now so they all open in new windows. we also received our first blog spam today, we're really moving up in the world.

any progress on web stuff? our various sites are getting stranger - i haven't touched anything but now telafonica.com opens up as a directory menu on firefox, though it still opens them main front page in explorer (only with everything linking back to my pc so it doesn't work). let's hurry up and get rid of it!!

does cell have any time to come and do some more vocal recording? i've got some holidays coming up so plan to get a fair bit of this stuff finished.

definitely the chicken

i've been thinking over the last few days - we actually have two sites already running that cover things like inform people about gigs, releases etc (myspace) and news/philosophy (this blog). although neither are what you'd call brilliant aesthetic pieces, they actually serve a large part of what people look for on the web at the moment. and they are in places (well, for the moment, the myspace page at least) where people are regularly likely to randomly stumble across it. i don't know that the regular website currently has that kind of exposure. but anyway, my point is, let's just make the telafonica website an artwork, ditch any notion of it being functional in the traditional web sense, and just do whatever we want on it. myspace and blogspot can look after the functionality. if we want to aestheticise those later, we can, but my impression is that the less gloss, the better anyway for those sites, though i do think this blogspot needs something). i'm quite keen to start publicising this blogspot - do you have any objections to me doing so? do you want to work on its appearance at all before that happens? i don't think random passers by are allowed to comment at the moment - can you change that setting (i can't, my admin level is not high enough - you could fix that too if you wanted).

i'm feeling something similar about gem. i think it's a big jump forward, but the song itself feels like it's just the song sung through over a soft section, and then repeated over a loud section. i've already edited down what marcella sang in order to hold of the melodic climaxes until the second part, but i think it can be tightened up more.

i'd like to make it a priority to get marcella out here and record some proper vocals for this is the new thing and requited love (at least). i'd like to start shipping them out to various folk for remixing, but that process in itself is likely to take at least a month or two, so an e.p. is still a few months off. so we need to get some proper vocal recording done very soon.

mesh counts

i've been e-mailing nick butcher (www.programmablepress.com) and he's been incredibly helpful with screenprinting info. i have learned that there are different mesh counts for silkscreen - kind of like resolution, i guess. the stuff he uses for superfine text etc is a 230count, much higher than the mesh i have. so we just need to get some finer mesh to do the fine detail stuff.

i've also got a quote from future classic for a deepchild remix. it's a fair bit from our perspective, but probably quite a good price for a remix. i just don't know if it's worth us risking the money on it. it could get a fair bit of publicity and airplay, but who knows? is it worth a large outlay for a name, or are we better off going for folk more at our level, which we can afford (because it's at a remix trade kind of level). i'd possibly have to say i would prefer that, especially if we organise trades, because that then pushes us working as well, rather than just buying credibility.

with what you've said, i think the lead track should be 'this is the new thing' with 'listening in for static' and 'requited love' getting remix treatments as well. it will involve us getting good vocals recorded for all in the near future, then we can start sending out for remixes.

moving the ball forward

i'm free saturday, monday and either tuesday or wednesday (but i don't know which yet). after that, we're spending a bit of time away. do you want to come around one of those days.

i've been thinking that maybe we should get an e.p. out, featuring a 'single' and some remixes of something we've been working on. if we got a handful of remixes onto cd, it would gear up things like fbi, 2ser etc and give us some time to get the rest of the album together. if we were to do it, what track(s) do you think are possible contenders? fairly obvious is 'this is the new thing', but other contenders may be 'listening in for static' or maybe 'send away' - i'm thinking radio friendly at this point in time. i've also thought perhaps we choose one and have its original version as the lead track, but then get remixes of another track or two, as well as a remix of the 'single', so that it's not just 5 versions of one track or whatever. i've kind of lost a bit of confidence in the vinyl idea, mostly because of the expense outlay, but i think a reasonable run (100-150) of a cd could be good. it would also give us a chance to jump into some artwork ideas without them having to be 'the album artwork'.

there's a few people who would be eager to do remixes (lipstick, victor x-ray etc). i've tried to track down a quote for people like rick to do one but haven't had much success liasing with his label.
