Sometime in 1991, a few songs fell off the back of a truck and ended up seeping down a drain to find a comfortable place in obscurity. 30 years later, on an urban exploration trip to find sites for vacuous political graffiti, The Unified Theory Of Everything stumbled across the songs slinking in a dark corner. Slipping them into a back pocket, they were then forgotten for a few months until chancing across them while cleaning out lint from a particularly fluffed up basket of washing. Taking them out to the garage in the backyard, the songs were brought to life in true lockdown isolation style. Meticulously recorded, one instrument at a time, trying desperately to sound like a band from another time and another place, the songs have finally been given their place in the sunlight as blasts of blissful shoegaze guitardelica.

Throughout 2016, the members of Telafonica will embark on a mission of each writing and recording a new song every month. Sometimes they won't succeed, but the ones that do get recorded will be released each month. There will be no restrictions on style or form, just the freedom to try anything out as each member sees fit. They might get others in the band to help out, or get other friends to help them out, or just go it completely alone. At the end of the year, the band will look back through the collection and see what themes, both musical and lyrical, have arisen, and use these as the basis of a new album in 2017. Think of it as the box-set bonus disc of your favourite album, except you get it before you get the actual album.

Inspired by Australia's awesome community radio networks, Telafonica are having a supporter drive. But, instead of asking for your support via money, we're asking for your e-mail address. This means we can keep you informed about our comings and goings, gigs, new releases etc.

In return, you get a download of our new EP, four tracks (plus a radio edit of one of them) of indie-electronic goodness, clocking in at 35 minutes worth of music.

As well as the regular audio, we've also included some enhanced visual versions of the tracks. These consist of custom artwork and lyrics for each track which appear on the screen of your digital music player as you listen. Think of them as a new media half-way house between video clips and the liner notes on traditional physical releases.

The music on the EP sees a sleeker electronic focus return to the Telafonica sound palette. Inspired by some of the usual suspects – Underworld, LCD Soundsystem, Sufjan Stevens, Ricardo Villalobos – the tracks are all sprawling, growing electronic impulses overlaid with earworm vocal melodies and lyrics exploring the nature of human existence.

Title track, 'Sister Zephyr', has been a live staple for some time now and was originally developed alongside the tracks from Telafonica's 2011 album – Sleeping With The Fishermen. It didn't quite fit with the sonics of the rest of the tracks at the time, however, so the recording was put to the side and returned to this year where it has been given its own life. Written in response to a loved one having a serious brain haemorrhage, it searches for joy and comfort within pain.

'Sister You Have' was largely written by Rebecca as a gift for fellow band member Ellie when the latter announced she would be getting married in late 2012. It's flowing melodies and building harmonies a euphoric celebration.

'Ask Me' is a song snippet embedded in an insistent dancefloor groove, turning itself into abstract contortions as it grows.

And, finally, 'The Thickness Of White' is a leftover instrumental track created by Adrian and Blake back in 2009 which has never found a home to fit elsewhere, even though it was loved enough to be tried out in all Telafonica releases since then. Finally, it has somewhere to sit comfortably and so can now meander moodily to its own heart's content.

'To Me', the 6th track from Telafonica's 'Sleeping With The Fishermen' album, becomes the 6th track to receive the full reworking treatment. Lunar Module keeps the vocal arrangement intact, but splices it onto a piece of nu-nu-wave synth-pop heaven. Limetipe goes all electronic moody, throwing out pretty much everything but a few little blips to create an enigmatic opus. Underlapper cast Telafonica in their own image, twisting the pop into dark moods highly reminiscent of their most recent album - Softly Harboured. Lessons In Time creates a whole new version, literalising the sounds of sleeping in dust with dirt on his brain (and, yes, Lessons In Time's Blake is also in Telafonica, but he didn't have much input into the original version, so chose this track as it was the one his Lessons In Time could most easily approach from the outside).

Track No. 5 from Telafonica's 'Sleeping With The Fishermen' album gets its turn at being twisted and turned into new and exciting shapes. Raven intricately re-recorded every sound from Telafonica's original master tracks, one by one, using just his cello - percussion, melodies, bassline, everything. The results are a million miles from the original, while being strangely identical. Hinterlandt turns the track into a loping electric lullaby, dragging the vocals through treacle and adding his own brand of multi-instrumental eclecticism. Genlevel pulls the track in another direction completely, converting it into a bass heavy electro workout, displaying his virtuoso roots in the 90s electronic underground, updated for today with wobbles, glitches and noise bursts.

The Sleeping With The Fishermen Remix project took a break in December, 2011, so that the album itself could be released. I Can See There's A Peace In The Dark sees the remixes flow once again.

First up is Australian legend, Dave McCormack (Custard, The Titanics, The Polaroids) who picks out the quirks of the track, ramps up the joyful, playful bits and presents a blissed out, summer groove. All artists were given free reign for their remixes - told to do whatever they like with the tracks. Canadians, Sally Paradise, go all out and actually cover the track for their version, creating a luxurious dream-pop with grainy synths, lazy guitars and canyons of reverb. Old friend Karoshi continue their run of sublime Telafonica remixes, glitching up, vocoderising and looping some vocal lines in a half-time stutter of moody atmospheres. America's Docile takes the harmony vocal and turns it into the main melody of a completely new chord structure, filled with piano and arppegiating synths to create music that could be soundtrack the emotional crux of an indie film.

Telafonica's 'Sleeping With The Fishermen' is a sprawling project with this album as its centrepiece. Over 7 tracks and 49 minutes, the Sydney based 5-piece continues their electronic and acoustic explorations, meshing traditional songs with wide-screen production, improvisation and experimentalism. The tracks draw inspiration from the overground, underground and all points in between, from Sufjan Stevens to Animal Collective, Feist to LCD Soundsystem, My Cat Is An Alien to Tamaru. Thrown into the Telafonica blender, those sounds emerge at the other end as abstract pop. They range from the 15 minute album bookends, 'Viceroy' and 'The Tail End Of Winter' which explore building atmospheres and groove based soundscapes, to 'The Unravelling Man's 90 second blast of electro squawl; the massed harmonies of 'I Can Hear There's A Piece In The Dark' and 'There's Something About Your Face'; and 'Heartbeatings For Those With Heartbeats' and 'To Me' with their mixes of noise, melody and groove.

The 'Sleeping With The Fishermen' project also includes 7 individual, free-download, commissioned remix EPs (so far, these have included mixes by Jonathan Boulet, Sounds Like Sunset, Sleepyhands, Actual Russian Brides, Dave McCormack (Custard) and St Jambience amongst many others, with more to come), 7 art films and a free download collection of fan mixes, created via the original stems which are being made public for anyone to download and manipulate. The EverythingIsChemical Virtual 7” train really gets moving with the second for the year and the 5th overall. Hot on the heels of RxGibbs' 3 tracks of ambient dream pop comes all new music from Australia's Telafonica.

The A-side is an all new original track - 'I Can Hear There's A Piece In The Dark'. Low-key, shoe-gaze verses make way for the joyous outbreak of soaring 5-part harmonies in the choruses (the first recording featuring all 5 of the band's current live line-up). Evoking feelings of waking at 3am amidst the tranquility of suburbia, the song is both celebratory and melancholy. This is the single version and is a preview of the band's new album, Sleeping With The Fishermen, which is slated for release in mid-2011 through 4-4-2 Music. The B-sides find a couple of cover tracks in keeping with one of the original ideas for the Virtual 7” series. The first is 'Like The 309', the last song Johnny Cash ever wrote, which he recorded in the months before his death and was released posthumously on his American V : A Hundred Highways album in 2006. Telafonica push the original's jaunty country feel through a wash of abstract autoharp atmosphere and deep electronic bass pulses, with Eliza Magill's vocals floating delicately over the top. The second B-side is a special Valentine's Day bonus, conceived and recorded after the release date of February 14 was set for the single. The crisp production of INXS's 'Need You Tonight' is replaced by Telafonica's murky tangle of lo-fi rhythms, xylophone and mandolin. Phased vocals remain upfront with those 5 voices again featuring in the call and response sections.

A limited edition, 3" CD-R released by the Sydney label Curt Recordings. The disc contains 3 tracks which were all begun earlier in 2010 when Adrian's laptop was in for repair. This meant that Bec's laptop was used for music making for a few weeks, but it initially lacked the ability to be able to record acoustic sounds. As a result, all these pieces started out very electronically, which is a slight jump away from other recent output by the band. The pieces were also a little more minimal and experimental.

Over the next few months, with original laptop back in action, the pieces were edited and overdubbed with more acoustic sounds, resulting in the finished pieces. '4/4 - 136' was originally modelled on the work of Robert Hood. The drum samples were all taken from Blake's ancient Yamaha PSR-150 keyboard and provide a gritty, lo-fi basis for the pushing rhythms and lead static swirls. '4/4 - 140 (6/8 - 105)' takes dubstep as its original template. The music was then sent to London where Marcella worked up a vocal to sing over the sounds. This was all then shipped back to Sydney where Blake and Adrian chopped, edited and manipulated Marcella's work back into the master recordings, creating a dark, polyrhythmic epic. '9/4 - 120' started life as a Public Enemy inspired rhythmic mess with samples stolen from EmptySet. A rough take was improvised in realtime, then Blake added some abstract cornet blasts and, in her first ever recorded instrumental work, 9 year old Imojjen laid down some abstract clarinet improvisation. These elements were then all taken and sculpted together into the finished form heard on the release.

The track titles all derive from the time signature and bpm of the relevant track, while the EP title is the number of digital bits found in the 18 1/2 minutes of music on the disc. The disc itself comes attached to an old 3 1/2" floppy disc and stored in an anonymous, hand numbered postage envelope.

The second single for the 'Love On The Second Stair' album. 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is the album's opening track. The edit here abbreviates the introduction but still has all the joyful racket that distorted kalimba, castañelas, floor tom, an Adam and the Ants drum sample, cowbells, phasing synth washes and 4-part vocals provide. 'Scarecrow In The Melon Patch' is the first of the B-sides, and was originally written with the idea of mixing the two great forms of garage - 60s garage rock and 90s garage house. 'Monday Wednesday Friday' is a low-key electronic pulse with bit crushed guitar and monotone/melodic vocal contrasts. 'The Quest For Love Aboard The Belafonte' was the first single from the album. This version was performed live to air on Sydney's FBi Radio in November of 2009. It features melodica, toy squeezebox, typewriter and floor tom - an acoustic version of sorts.

In May of 2008, the four currently Australian based members of Telafonica made their debut together. Their live set was based on older Telafonica tracks, the newer members replicating and fleshing out roles that had been established by members now based overseas. In the ensuing 18 months, the Australian based contingent has busily been adding their own work to that repertoire as they have gigged regularly in and around Sydney. The first fruits of this new music was the 7” single, 'Nothing Ventured', released in late 2008. Following a clear out of older unreleased material on the early 2009 mini-album, 'I Saw This And Thought Of You', as well as brand new material and covers appearing on compilations such as 'New Weird Australia Vol 1' (New Weird Australia) and 'Introducing Townes Van Zandt Via The Great Unknown' (Forthesakeofthesong), 'Love On The Second Stair' sees the first extended output from the new line-up.

While still deeply rooted in electronic rhythms and processing, the addition of Blake Wassell (Lessons In Time), Eliza Magill and Rebecca Elmer has seen the band's sound expand into more organic domains. All four members write and sing, colouring the tracks in diverse ways. For the first time on a Telafonica release, all the tracks are song based with a cohesive lyrical focus, alluded to in the album title. A widening of live sounds has also resulted, ranging from traditional piano, cornet and glockenspiel through to the quirkier toy piano, curtain rods and typewriter, as well as a wide range of acoustic percussion. Trainspotters can also listen out for samples or sonic references from/to the likes of Gus Gus, Martini Bros, Adam and the Ants, The Beatles, Chemical Brothers, LCD Soundsystem, Animal Collective, Efterklang and Sufjan Stevens, amongst many others.

The London based contingent of Telafonica has certainly not been abandoned, with founding member David Hughes responsible for the artwork and design of the album packaging, the full release version of which is printed using risograph technology.

'The Quest For Love Aboard The Belafonte' is lead single from the album 'Love On The Second Stair'. It features the original version and three remixes. Actual Russian Brides push the track through abstract 8-bits and bouncing sub-bass. Karoshi redresses the song in his own lush chord arrangements and down-tempo groove. Telafonica recast their own track as a dark triptych with vocal cutups, abrasive grooves and bit-crushed melancholy.

Between the release of the MORPHEME album and February 2008, the three original members of Telafonica slowly worked up a new batch of recordings with the aim of creating a new album. By the time Marcella and David left for London at the beginning of 2008, these had not yet quite been completed and it was uncertain as to whether they might be released at all. A few tracks were sent to different compilations (see Super Shiny Sydney, Seek and Destroy or Pop Songs For Edith Metzger) while others became individually released e-singles (see 4-4-2 Music e-Single of the Month Club, January 2009). The 7 tracks which finally became I Saw This And Thought Of You were chosen for their cohesion, then polished up with remixing and some final overdubs for release in early 2009. With many of the tracks still staples in the band's live sets, the exposure of these songs was felt to still be important, hence their final release.

The tracks explore familiar Telafonica territory of melancholy and movement, but with new textural depth via field recordings and grainier digital manipulation. Kaleidescopes of subtly perceptable action hide and play behind attention grabbing facades.

The disc comes with a poster in a box with all design and artwork by David and his Designed by Kind Permission.

dj foundation - the mosul mix

a remix i did for dj foundation just before christmas was chosen to be part of his promo dj mix which is going out all over the planet. he's a producer from iraq signed to metal postcard. he's got a bit of a name for himself for aiming broadsides at american foreign policy etc. the remix i did was for a track called 'clinton', which features snatches of a speech by bill when he was el pres. his words have been slyly edited by dj foundation. anyway, the mix is now available in a relatively low bit rate mp3, but will be heard on radio around the globe over the next few months hopefully.

while making the remix i was listening to buraka som sistema's album quite a lot, so the rhythms are pretty much ripped off from there. i wanted a big repetitive bass line that had some funk, i think i got it.

Our first ever 7" single, featuring a very old song - Nothing Ventured - which has existed in some form since Bubblejuggler days, but which has never found the right structure to be successful. Midway through 2008, it was rethought and remade as a lo-fi half-time groove pop song, and at long last worked, becoming a live staple. The other side features a track that was originally a Lessons In Time track, but which Telafonica took and added to the live set, along with extra vocals and bells.

Byron Coley reviewed the single as follows in Wire magazine (July 2009):
"Lathe cut single by a Sydney based quartet (or trio) whose numbers have a tendency to float off to the UK. The A side is a nicely wound, abstract combination of strings and laptop, a bit in the style of some old Keith Fullerton Whitman performances. But there are soft arcs of moany vocals in spots that give it a very different feel from anything Hrvatski ever did. The flip has a twinkle-pop take on bedroom Kevin Ayers moves. Which is a surprise. And a good one."

The release is a lathe cut vinyl by Peter King in New Zealand, and the cover was hand screenprinted, folded and glued by Telafonica.

different artists releases a virtual 7" single every month and december
2006 sees telafonica release two tracks. both tracks are technically
outtakes from the morpheme album, tracks that ended up not quite
fitting in or being not quite complete. however, they have been
polished up and made available for free here. they are exclusive and
not available on any other release.
