croatia in newcastle

would we be interested in heading up to newcastle on friday, november 6 for a gig at the croatian in newcastle? it's being organised by chris from alps (he's also playing at it) and he's asked if we'd be interested. it would involve about an hour and a half drive each way - so we may need to take work considerations into account (ellie). i'm personally starting to get itchy feet and want to play in other places, so i'm enthusiastic, but know that there's other issues which may mean we can't, though.

thursdays, saturdays and sundays.

so we're booked in to play august 20 at the hollywood hotel in surry hills. we're on at 9:20 for 40 mins. and also, to confirm for your diaries, we are doing radio social at the world bar on sunday, september 20. i've also made a tentative booking at mars hill for saturday, nov 14, in order to launch the new album. is everyone free for that and happy to play? any suggestions for support bands? lessons in time? or someone outside who can bring extra audience members? and on that note, it also means we need to have an album ready ion the night. i would ideally love to have it ready about 3 weeks beforehand so we can send out promos to radio and media. david - is that a realistic timeframe in which to get the artwork together? i would imagine, say, october 23rd-ish.

the one that got away

after to-ing and fro-ing with darren the booker for candy's apartment today, i finally sent an e-mail saying we could do the gig on the 13th. he was after a headline band, which i wasn't sure we could do, to replace an act that had pulled out at short notice. anyway, i then got a message to say that another band had got in just before us. so in the end we missed out, but i think it will be ok - it was good to get to talk to him and we're on the radar now, so hopefully something can come of it down the line. in a really bizarre train of events, however, two of the other great venues in sydney, the hopetoun and spectrum, emailed out of the blue to offer us spots at their respective new band nights. so all these gigs are now floating around, which is quite nice. just need to work out some details.

update on dirty shirlows show

i'm quite excited - find a venue, ask for a show, then send e-mails to people who are your musical heroes and ask them if they want to play with you. the great things is, most of them say 'yes', and if they don't, they're really polite and enthusiastic and give you a good reason and then say to ask them again down the track. so i asked a handful of folks about our show at dirty shirlows in june, and so far meem has said yes, and also the e.l.f., who is darren from gerling in his solo guise. not quite sure how telafonica will go down in that company, but i think it will work. and for me, it's a killer line-up that i'm very proud to be part of!

a week off is a week to do

i've planned wednesday afternoon to go to ant's studio and do some mixing. hopefully we can finalise decidions by then? i'm going at 3pm - 6am london time ;). we have another date for another gig. i'm excited about this one because it's in a new warehouse venue which is really the type of venue i'd most like to play. it's called dirty shirlows and it's in marrickville. we're playing on saturday, june 14. not 100% on the other acts yet, but we get to organise them, so they'll be good. there's a chance a guy from brisbane who may be coming down calle aheadphonehome could be playing with us, but that's no confirmed yet, and there will be others as well. anyone up for recording/rehearsal friday? friday evening seems good for ellie and blake to rehearse. steve, do you want to do some recording in the afternoon then stay for a rehearsal?

gigs to come

well, there's a few gigs lined up for the next couple of months, so we should get a move on with starting to try and put it together and rehearse. so far, there's the one on good friday and paddy macguires with underlapper and sui zhen. i've also booked us in for just like now at mars hill cafe on may 10 - i think it's going to be the last of the regular just like nows, so i thought telafonica could finish it since telafonica started it. we'll be playing with karoshi. there's also a possibility of a gig on april 5 at midi in the city at the loft bar at uts. we played there last year but it's a bit more of a laptop type of thing than a band kind of scene, and there's also the possibility of a clash with another gig with some friends from melbourne called koshowko, so that one's not confirmed yet. and lastly, we've just got another gig on thursday, may 29 at the excelsior hotel in surry hills. again, underlapper look like they'll be on t...

the next big step.

just in time before your imminent departure, we've got a date confirmed for our first hughesless show. it's going to happen on friday, march 21 (good friday) at paddy macguires in haymarket. also on the bill will be underlapper and most probably sui zhen - two of the types of artists i think we most need to be on bills with (i.e. not really rock, not really electronic, but bands for a stage rather than a dancefloor). i think it's a great bill. now we just need to get a telafonica set together!

girl, cat and bear

i think this is possibly my favourite carlos barrios painting ever, and it was largely created on the stage of the cat and fiddle. not a bad gig all up. got us (well, david), back into enjoying gigs and also produced some good art. i was just thinking about our gigs this year the other day. i think they've all been fairly enjoyable, and not a single one has been in front of what we could regard as our regular crowd. i've enjoyed that aspect of playing in front of people i don't know! sent off a bunch of promos to 2ser, 3rrr and a couple to individuals around the planet. there's been a reasonable amount of airplay on fbi so far, though they didn't playlist anything, which i was a bit disappointed with - thought they might have liked something on there. but i'm very happy to keep plugging it around the place.
